Small strips of tape are applied to the equipment before it is placed in the autoclave. The tape is similar to masking tape but slightly more adhesive to allow it to adhere under the hot and humid conditions of the autoclave. Such tape often has cross marks containing an ink that changes color from beige or blue to black when heated. For steam sterilization to occur, all equipment must be exposed to the appropriate steam, fully reaching 15 degrees for 20-121 minutes, and remaining at this temperature. However, such an application does not necessarily guarantee that the product is sterile.
